Guinea Pigs: A brief introduction
Guinea pigs, or “Cavies” - short for Cavia porcellus, are understandably very popular pets due to their affection nature and easy care. Guinea pigs are rodents that likely originated in the Andres mountain region of South America - not Guinea as the name implies (of course, they aren’t “pigs” either…) Guinea pigs evolved in the wild as food for both land and air predators and this is the reason that to this day many are so nervous. Originally guinea pigs would have lived in herds led by a single dominant male that had exclusive breeding rights to the females. Guinea pigs are naturally social creatures that use their unique squeaks and squeals for communication - including warning each other about approaching predators. Guinea pigs are herbivores, meaning they eat an exclusively vegetarian diet. One of the most interesting facts about guinea pigs is that unlike humans, their teeth grow continuously and are meant to be worn down through gnawing.
